SGS & Carework Network Announce Working Agreement
December 15, 2020
The Southern Gerontological Society (SGS) and the Carework Network are pleased to announce that the organizations entered into a working agreement in July, 2020. SGS is a regional gerontological membership organization that bridges research and practice in the field of aging, and the Carework Network is an international organization of researchers, policymakers, and advocates involved in various domains of care work.
According to Jennifer Craft Morgan, past president of SGS and past co-chair of the Carework Network, “The organizations came together from a shared respect and appreciation for the importance of care work within the populations that each represents.” SGS focuses on the impact of aging issues among older adults in the South and the Carework Network focuses on care work over the life course. Adds Morgan, “The work that each organization undertakes in their common areas of interest can help inform and enrich the understanding of the complex and important role that caregiving provides.”
The inaugural event of the newly formed relationship was a co-hosted webinar on November 2 entitled, “Women’s Rights, Care Work and Policy during COVID-19“. Two international scholars reflected on the challenges North and South American women face, as they are disproportionately affected by the current crisis. The webinar provided an opportunity to consider common challenges as well as how place and context demand a different response. Attended by an international audience, the webinar was presented in English and Spanish and included closed captioning for both languages, allowing participation for both English and Spanish speakers.
“Our organizations plan to collaborate on additional webinars and other educational events deemed important to the respective memberships, providing opportunities to expand attendance and share information of common interest,” added Mignon Duffy, co- chair of the Carework Network. A newly formed SGS/Carework Network committee is developing a strategic plan outlining planned projects and activities of mutual benefit that will help support the missions of both organizations.
