Policy and Advocacy Statement
Policy and Advocacy Statement
At the 2025 SGS Annual Meeting, the Public Policy & Advocacy Committee shared the following statement. We wanted to share the statement with those who were unable to attend.
At the Southern Gerontological Society (SGS), we are committed to advancing research, education, and practice to enhance the lives of older adults and all who care for them. As a collegial organization, we are committed to fostering a supportive environment where researchers, practitioners, educators, advocates and older adults are welcomed to collaborate, present their work, and ultimately bridge gerontological education, research, and practice.
Our Commitment to Aging in the South
SGS envisions a future where older adults and those who care for them thrive. Our work is grounded in scientific inquiry and evidence-based decision-making. It is from that lens that we educate, elevate, and champion on policies, practices and research that improves the collective well-being of older adults.
Aging in the Southern United States presents unique cultural, economic, and environmental challenges. SGS prioritizes region-specific research, education, and practice, ensuring that aging-related policies and services reflect the distinct needs of Southern communities. By fostering continued research, education, and dialogue, we help shape programs and systems that strengthen the safety net for older adults in the region and beyond.
Bridging Aging Research and Practice
Collaboration is at the heart of SGS. We cultivate partnerships among researchers, practitioners, policymakers, educators, advocates, and older adults to translate scientific knowledge into practical solutions. Through this exchange, we ensure that cutting-edge research informs policy and practice, driving meaningful improvements in aging services and quality of life.
Call to Action
SGS is an evidence-driven society dedicated to fostering dialogue, collaboration, and progress in gerontology. We invite researchers, practitioners, educators, older adults, and advocates to engage with us—share your work, contribute your insights, and help shape the future of aging.
