Gerontology Programs at the University of Maryland Baltimore and University of Maryland Baltimore County
The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) offer interdisciplinary training focused on understanding the complex processes of human aging. The MS in Gerontology, offered by UMB, prepares students to apply gerontological knowledge and skills in professional roles that support older adults and aging populations. The PhD in Gerontology, a joint program between the UMB and UMBC, prepares scholars to conduct interdisciplinary research on aging. Both programs emphasize an integrative perspective that recognizes the dynamic relationships between individuals and the historical, economic, social, cultural, environmental, psychological, and biological contexts in which aging occurs.
In addition, UMB’s School of Graduate Studies offers the Entrepreneurship and Science Communication for Aging and Aging-Related Research (ESCAAR) program, a 10-month hybrid fellowship designed for doctoral students and postdoctoral or early-career scholars interested in aging research. This entrepreneurial and communication program expands early-career researchers’ career opportunities to translate discoveries into solutions that improve the lives of older adults.

The Accreditation for Gerontology Education Council (AGEC) and the National Association for Professional Gerontologists (NAPG)
Dedicated to professionalizing gerontology and raising its profile, the Accreditation for Gerontology Education Council (AGEC) accredits gerontology degree programs, and the National Association for Professional Gerontologists (NAPG) credentials the expertise of practicing gerontology professionals. Founded in 2016, AGEC has accredited or reaccredited 10 gerontology degree programs at the associate, baccalaureate and master’s levels. While AGEC requires programs to infuse the gerontology competencies into the curriculum and measure their students’ acquisition of them as the student learning standard, it recognizes and encourages the unique and innovative qualities of individual gerontology programs. NAPG was founded in 2005 and has credentialed over 400 members at the associate, baccalaureate and graduate levels. In a field without licensing in which individuals may claim expertise based on little legitimate gerontology education, NAPG offers through its CPGTM (Credentialed Professional Gerontologist) designation a recognized symbol of educational achievement and professional expertise. Both AGEC and NAPG are 501c3s and together represent credibility, competency, and quality assurance in the field of gerontology.
