The Beauty of Aging Photo Project

SGS The Beauty of Aging Project

What is The Beauty of Aging Photo Project?

The Southern Gerontological Society (SGS) believes there is too much focus on negative stereotypes and perceptions of older adults and aging. SGS wishes to spotlight the beauty of aging by inviting students to submit photos of the older adult(s) in their lives that represent the beauty of aging. These photos will be used in a fundraiser for the SGS Endowment Campaign which provides grants to organizations serving older adults in our region. Therefore, not only will the photo serve as a positive example of aging, it will also have a direct impact on improving the lives of older adults!

Please review our poster and video for additional information.

Who can participate?
The Beauty of Aging Photo Project is open to students from Kindergarten through 12th grade who reside in our region: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia.

How does a student participate?
The student should take a photo of an older adult(s) in their life and be prepared to share a few words on why that older adult(s) is beautiful. Students should be sure to ask permission of the older adult(s) in your photo. We ask that the student or the student’s legal guardian give each person in the photo a copy of our Photo Subject Information Sheet. You can print it and hand it to them or share this website with them.

The photo may be submitted using the form below. You will be asked the following information:

  • Student Name
  • Student Age
  • Student Grade
  • Name of Legal Guardian
  • Phone Number of Legal Guardian
  • Email of Legal Guardian
  • Title of Photo
  • What is the name of the person(s) in the photo and how do you know them?
  • In your own words, please tell us why they are beautiful.
  • Upload photo

An additional consent form must be completed in order for the photo to be used. If the student is 18 or older, they can complete the consent form. For students under 18, a legal guardian must complete the consent form. The consent form includes two sections. The first gives permission for the student to participate in the project. The second confirms that anyone in the submitted photo was asked permission for their photo to be used and that they were given the Photo Subject Information Sheet.

You can access the consent form here. Additionally, you will receive an email after submitting your photo which will include a link to the consent form.

How will the photos be used?
SGS will display the photos on our website and at the 2023 SGS Annual Meeting & Conference. We may also share the photos though our social media outlets when discussing the project.

Additionally, the photos will be used in the creation of a printed product (e.g., calendar, poster, postcard, etc.) which will be sold as a fundraiser for the SGS Endowment Campaign. Funds raised are used to provide small grants to organizations within the SGS region for work that improved the lives of older adults. All student participants will receive a free copy of an item developed for this fundraiser.
