2023 Service Project
Stroll - Roll - Socialize
Neptune's Fury Cafe & Roastery
999 Waterside Drive, Norfolk, VA
April 15, 2023
11:00 am –1:00 pm ET
The Southern Gerontology Society (SGS) is proud to be holding our 44th Annual Meeting & Conference in the beautiful city of Norfolk, VA. As part of our conference, we feel it is important to give back to the local community through service.
This year, we are thrilled to partner with SPINCLUSION. SPINCLUSION is the Hampton Roads affiliate of the global Cycling Without Age program. They are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization formed in partnership with Bike Norfolk that is run by volunteers and provides bicycle rides to seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities in the Hampton Roads community who wouldn't be able to do so on their own. All rides are free and led by trained pilots in various areas of the community. Click here to see a video of our favorite bicycle, the trishaw.
You can learn more about SPINCLUSION at https://www.spinclusion.org/.
As part of our service project, we are inviting conference attendees, SGS members, our broader aging network, and members of the Norfolk community to consider making a donation to SPINCLUSION to assist in the purchase of another bike. This will allow them to provide more rides. Any size donation is welcome.
Click on DONATE NOW to enter the size of your donation before completing the additional fields. Click CHECKOUT to complete the process.
In addition to raising funds, we also want to help inform older adults in the Norfolk community about the wonderful work being done by SPINCLUSION.
We are hosting a FREE Stroll – Roll – Socialize event on April 15, 2023 from 11 AM – 1 PM.
Neptune’s Fury Café & Roastery has generously agreed to host us. The front entrance is in the building next to the security desk and can be accessed via the attached parking garage (the one with the whale painted on the side) or the front of the building. Parking will be validated.
- Inside, you will enjoy coffee and flatbreads and have the opportunity to engage in conversation with fellow Norfolk residents as well as SGS conference attendees from across to Southeast.
- The Elizabeth River Trail Foundation will have trail resources and a trail historian on site.
- SPINCLUSION will be providing a limited number of rides along the Elizabeth River Trail. You must request a ride during registration. SPINCLUSION representatives will be available to answer questions about scheduling a future ride if you aren’t able to ride at the event.
- Pedego Electric Bikes will be providing a limited number of free electric bike rides. These must be requested when you register.
- Lime e-bikes will be onsite and available to ride for purchase. While the event is free, you will need to pay to ride the e-bike. Please download the Lime app to your phone if you are interested in riding. We will have a limited number of helmets, but we encourage you to bring your own if you have one.
- If you have your own bike, we encourage you to bring it and enjoy a nice ride along the beautiful Elizabeth River Trail.
- If you miss out on a free ride from SPINCLUSION or Pedego Electric Bikes, we hope you will still plan to attend and enjoy a nice stroll down the ERT. We will have volunteers ready to walk with you and enjoy a nice conversation.
This event is free, but registration is required as space is limited.
