GRITS Hall of Fame Member
2023 Inductee
Throughout his career, Jim’s research has focused on health care issues, especially long-term care, medical nutrition, hospice care, and advance directives. His collaborations have been numerous and productive, yielding scores of articles and chapters, and his 1987 book, Applied Research in Gerontology, highlighted a significant emerging subfield in gerontological research.
Two of his many professional contributions were serving as President of AGHE and for four years as editor-in-chief of The Gerontologist, the leading journal of research about practice in our field. During his tenure as editor, the journal flourished. The number of articles submitted and published increased, as did the journal’s scholarly reputation. His dedicated stewardship and careful editorial hand had a lasting impact on one of GSA’s and the nation’s leading scholarly publications. Jim McAuley has long been recognized as one of the foremost social science scholars in gerontology and a leader in our field.
He has been honored by GSA’s Behavioral and Social Science Section with its highly prized Outstanding Mentor Award and by AGHE with the 2006 Clark Tibbitts Award for his influential work in the advancement of gerontological and geriatrics education.
